Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a teacher in Richmond, CA, at a charter high school called Leadership Public School. This young charter school has a focus on taking traditionally underserved youth and giving them access to a strong, college preparatory education. We provide this through strong teachers, a small school setting, a leadership curriculum, a four-year advisory, and a culture of academic rigor. Our students are nearly 90% students of color, and 75% students who qualify for Free or Reduced Price Lunch status. I teach a leadership advisory course. During this advisory, I would like to have my students read for 20 minutes each day in an activity called "sustained silent reading." This activity is meant to inspire students to read on their own and develop a love of reading. This activity encourages teachers to let students read any book that appeals to them. I would like to develop a library for my students to choose from. I want my students, primarily African-American and Latino, to be able to connect to the characters in the story in order to find a love of reading. I have selected 30 books that I would like to begin the foundation of our library. We will read together, silently as a class, in an effort to develop our reading comprehension ability as well as writing and reflecting through journal writing. It is through a passion for reading that I believe my students will flourish as learners and take their academic careers seriously. I am trying to set a strong academic tone for my class and I believe that by offering my students a selection of books that will appeal to them, they will devour the material and become ambitious readers. However, we need books to start, and you can help support this initiative through helping me build a library for my students. The books I have chosen are as follows: 1. Black and White - Volpori 2. Song of the Water Saints - Rosario 3. Drown - Diaz 4. Down these Mean Streets - Thomas 5. Accidental Love - Soto 6. Too Many Tamales - Soto 7. Taking Sides - Soto 8. Buried Onions - Soto 9. Iqbal - D'adano 10. Finding our Way - Saldana, Jr. 11. Breaking Through - Francisco Jimenez 12. The Rose that Grew from Concrete - Shakur 13. Bound - Napoli 14. The Coldest Winter Ever - Souljah 15. Push: A Novel - Sapphire 16. 47 - Mosley 17. The Republic of East LA: Stories - Rodriguez 18. Growing Up in Slavery - Taylor 19. The Autobiography of Malcolm X - Alex Haley 20. Legend of Buddy Bush - Moses 21. 145th Street - Myers 22. Bang - Flake 23. Almost a Woman - Santiago 24. Bad Boy - Myers 25. The Skin I'm In - Flake 26. The First Part Last - Johnson 27. Like Sisters on the Homefront - Williams- Garcia 28. Romiette and Julio - Draper 29. Autobiography of my Dead Brother - Myers 30. Last Shot - Feinstein Thank you very much!
