This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school in North Philadelphia. We are a K-8 public school. I would like to bring books into the classroom that the students can relate to. My students come from various backgrounds and I would like to bring in as many books as I can from different types of authors. I would also like to incorporate into my classroom more art based assessments to give students multiple outlets for expressing their knowledge. I believe that multi-modal education is the best way to meet the needs of the most students.

My Project

This year, my students found a new love in reading by having books that relate more to their life than ever before. Last year, my students only read one book in class and it took the entire year. This year students have already read three books in class and are hungry for more. The books that I am requesting are ones that tackle the difficult issues that students who live in the city face every day. These books keep the students interested and leave them with a desire to keep reading each day. I want to provide more books to my students so we can come closer to closing the achievement gap within our 8th grade class.
