My Project
These books will be used to allow students a hands-on reading experience, in contrast to our online curriculum. Students at my school love reading high-interest books, but often don't read because they are intimidated and defeated when it comes to reading. The graphic novel version of "Parable of the Sower" will especially appeal to lower level readers and SPED/ELL populations who need visuals to aid in comprehension.
The ELA Department chose these books because they are culturally relevant and of high interest to our students.
Many times students are inundated with books that are of little interest. Choosing high-interest books will encourage students to actually read, which will improve their reading level and their academic performance. Students will conduct a book study on one of the books, and present their findings to their peers and the school community.
