Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My aim is to take a virtual, graduate level course at Fairfield University entitled "Teaching and Learning within a Multicultural Contexts in Education". The course is described as "explor[ing] and address[ing] the multifaceted aspects of multicultural education with the aim of engaging in a teaching-learning process where participants explore their commitment to the well-being and learning of all students; develop a deep understanding of the needs of all students; develop strategies to promote caring, justice, and equity in teaching; learn to respect linguistic, racial, ethnic, gender, and cultural diversity; investigate how students construct knowledge; demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between students' daily life experiences and education; and critique systematic processes of discrimination that marginalize and silence various groups of students.

Through interactive discussions, case studies, and reflective activities with other educators, I will have the opportunity to explore various teaching strategies aimed at fostering socio-emotional development in diverse student populations.

I will also be able to engage with literature on culturally responsive teaching, attend workshops on empathy-building techniques, and participate in simulations to understand the perspectives of marginalized groups.

After the pandemic, I left behind tenure at a local, private college preparatory school in my town for a rewarding experience at an inner city, Title I school. This change has resulted in a need to reevaluate my teaching style and approach. This change has emerged a heightened awareness of the socio-emotional needs of my students, and I am hoping this course will help me to create inclusive learning environments where every student feels valued and supported. I look forward to equipping myself with practical strategies to promote empathy, justice, and equity in my teaching practices, ultimately enhancing student engagement, well-being, and academic achievement.
