My Project

All of our students walk in shoes of different sizes, colors, shapes and designs. Each day, our classes walk the same halls, eat in the same lunchroom and learn from the same teachers (for the most part). In class, the study of famous US court cases will provide the opportunity for our students to gain new perspectives and understanding as they "walk in the shoes of another. " This helps them with the basic idea that we all come from different backgrounds yet we share a common thread of connection through our classroom community. Picture books are great for the kids because they can visualize the time period and events, gain familiarity with other cultures as well as begin to gain insight into our justice system. As they progress, they will be able to do team and independent work to build clarity around how the justice system operates in order to ensure equal opportunity despite racial, ethnic or religious differences. Students will be able to take this insight with them when they move through their educational careers and allow them a broad stroke of empathy for each "new pair of shoes" they come across. Students’ culture and lived experiences that influence how they understand and make sense of the world or themselves are an integral part of who they are as learners, and the books in this project will enrich this experience.
