Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A class set of culturally diverse graphic novels would help my students identify and engage with the text!
Reading is often a difficult activity for students with special needs, yet having access to engaging and culturally diverse literature encourages every student to connect to the text!
We are a Title I middle school, which means we receive federal funds to help improve the academic achievement of disadvantaged kids.
Due to the location of the school, the majority of students are struggling to have their basic needs met. The students in my special education Language Arts classes are motivated and positive sixth graders. They have disabilities that include Specific Learning Disabled, Autism, Dyslexia, Developmentally Delayed, and Emotional Disturbance.
Many are also English Language Learners, which means they speak a different language at home. Learning to read and comprehend in English is a challenging task for them. The graphic novels hold their interest and encourage reading comprehension skills. There are currently 50 students that would be positively impacted by this DonorsChoose project.
My Project
The "Breadwinner" graphic novel series is an incredibly diverse set of graphic novels that I am able to share with my distance learners and when we return to the classroom. Students will be able to connect with the main character, Parvana, who disguises her identity in order to save her family in Afghanistan. My students love their families, and it will facilitate positive discussions on helping one another through struggling times in life.
"The One and Only Ivan" class set and audio CD will serve as an important reminder to students that we need to care for all creatures, big and small.
Ivan and his friends at the Big Top Mall deserve a better life, and thankfully my students will be able to see the characters attain their goal!
