Help me give my students diverse books that represent their cultures and experiences as well as those different than them! Additionally, I'm asking for #ownvoice books to communicate to my students of color that they can be authors!
My school serves a diverse group of children, from varying walks of life.
Despite their many cultural and economic differences, all of my students have one thing (ok maybe a few) in common: they are kind, empathetic, and motivated kids.
They truly care about the world around them and are excited to learn about it and make an impact. I want to empower my students to be thought leaders and action takers through the materials I provide them!
My Project
When taking inventory of my classroom library this year, I was disappointed to realize that my books, as well as the authors who wrote them, were not culturally diverse. As a lover of reading myself, it's my goal to put THE book in a student's hand that will make them a lifelong reader.
I want to provide books for my students that represent their cultures and experiences.
Research has shown that books are "mirrors" and "windows." Students both need to be able to see themselves reflected in books as well see books about people different than them. I plan to use some of these books as read alouds in my classroom to promote discussions on topics such as immigration, race, and LGBTQ+ rights/experiences.
By supporting these projects you will put books into the hands of students for years to come and also play a role in ensuring that my students become empathetic citizens who are able to discuss and express their opinions on current issues in today's world. Additionally, my featuring #ownvoice books in my classroom I can communicate to my students of color that their voices and stories are valuable!
