Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is full of a wonderfully diverse group of students. I have students who speak English, Spanish, Karen, Arabic, French, and so many more.
Having such a wide array of students has led to some challenges in finding literature that they can relate to.
My hope is to furnish my classroom with a variety of books that my unique students can identify with and learn from; not just your average high interest books, but those dealing with social class, ethnicity, religion, etc.
My Project
There are over 25 different languages spoken in our school district, which makes my classroom a cultural melting pot of languages and nationalities. Finding literature that all of my students can relate to can be a real challenge with so many different groups in one room.
Not only do I want to welcome my students with my words and actions, I want to welcome them with the selection of books I provide for them.
I want my students to be able to come into my classroom and find a book on the shelf that's about someone like them.
I have a large classroom library that I've amassed over the years, but I would like to include more multicultural works for my kids. I believe that giving students access to literature they can relate to will just increase their likelihood of picking up a book. My students are required to read at least 20 novels per year for their independent reading goals, and with a limited selection of culturally diverse books to choose from, many are having trouble finding books they are interested in. Due to that, some students are not reaching their full potential grade-wise. Having a more diverse selection of books will help all of my students find interesting books to read, and reach their full classroom potential.
