My Students

Three-quarters of our school's population is Asian and/or Pacific Islander, so one of my biggest goals as a teacher is to give a voice to minority writers in my ELA class. I want my students to see successful writers who share their cultural backgrounds so that they have something to aspire to as young writers.

At the beginning of the year, I anticipated these classes being my most difficult because of how talkative the students are, but I have since learned to embrace their love of discussion, and now these classes have become my favorite to teach because we're able to have such engaging discussions.

Many of our students come from low-income backgrounds in which education is not always a priority. So it's amazing when they find a piece of writing that they can relate to because it helps to bridge the divide between their school and home lives. I want to continue to find culturally relevant literature for these students so that they can learn to love reading and writing as much as I do.

My Project

"The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan will be used on a regular basis throughout the third quarter. The episodic nature of the book and the frequent use of metaphor and symbolism provide a perfect opportunity for students to practice literary analysis. The book will be supplemented with Chinese immigrant poetry, poetry utilizing kaona (a Native Hawaiian literary technique), and short stories and poems by other local writers. The goal at the end of the quarter will be for the students to write a literary analysis essay focusing on one of the themes presented in the book.

Having gone to school in the same community I now work in, I know firsthand how desperately our students need literature that relates to their unique cultural backgrounds.

It is essential for students to have role models that they can relate to so that they can see what is possible for them as well. If we (as teachers) limit the minority voices we present in our curriculum, we also limit our minority students' voices and their ability to share their experiences. Including authors of varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds in English Language Arts classrooms not only allows students to experience different perspectives, but empowers them as writers.
