Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I am not the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world", MaryAnne Radmacher wrote, and I want my students to be able to say the same. International travel is an educational experience that changes lives, inspires global citizenship and fosters intercultural connections.
I am a Spanish teacher at a urban high school that has a group of exceptionally bright and compassionate students who are passionate about language learning.
Next spring we will be leading a Spanish immersion trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. My fellow teachers and I have worked hard to create a connection in Mexico, and are excited to be spending ten days living with Oaxacan families, visiting the amazing historical and cultural sites of the Oaxacan valley, and learning more about what it means to be an active global citizen. All of the extraordinary students selected to participate have shown their passion for the Spanish language and cultures both in and outside of the class room. In addition to our daily Spanish classes students participate in a bi-monthly seminar on Mexican life, culture and history. In addition to learning about Monte Alban, mole, and Benito Juarez, students are investigating aspects of Mexican life and history and making connections to their own Chicago community.
My Project
The cost of international travel is high. We are working as a group to raise the funds needed for this once in a lifetime trip. However, to make international travel available to all of our students, regardless of background or economic status, we need the outside support from those who understand the benefits of fostering global connections for our students. One of our greatest costs are the tours and excursions that we hope to partake in while visiting Oaxaca. We are now trying to raise the funds for a tour of the colonial city center, a day trip to the breathtaking archaeological site of Monte Alban, transportation to visit the bustling and colorful markets of Talcolula and Teotilan del Valle, a visit to the Museo de culturas de Oaxaca and an overnight Eco-tour in the Sierra Norte mountains. Your help is one step in making our big dream come true. Helping us raise the funds needed for travel will solidify the relationship we want to build with the international community.
Your help will show my students that there are others who share their love of learning and compassion towards others.
While your donation directly supports the student chosen for the trip, its overall impact is much greater. This cultural exchange will enrich the learning environment of all students at our school through our sharing photos, stories, and artifacts that will bring the Spanish language to life in the classroom and foster long lasting global connections for our school.
