Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Garden supplies obtained through DonorsChoose offer urban students a unique hands-on learning experience. Through planting, nurturing, and observing the growth of plants, students engage in interdisciplinary learning. They understand concepts of biology, ecology, and environmental science in a tangible way. Math skills are honed through measurements and calculations related to plant growth, while literacy skills are enhanced through reading about plants and documenting their observations.

In many urban areas, access to fresh produce is limited, contributing to health disparities.

This school gardening project facilitated by DonorsChoose, students learn about the importance of nutrition and sustainable food sources. They develop an appreciation for fresh fruits and vegetables, which can positively impact their dietary choices and overall health.

Urban students often lack exposure to green spaces and environmental conservation efforts. DonorsChoose garden supplies introduce them to the concept of environmental stewardship. By caring for plants and creating green spaces, students develop a sense of responsibility towards the environment. They learn about concepts such as composting, water conservation, and biodiversity, empowering them to become advocates for sustainable practices in their communities.

Gardening has therapeutic effects on mental health, offering urban students a respite from the stresses of city life. Engaging with nature has been linked to reduced stress, anxiety, and depression. Students can find solace in the natural world, fostering a sense of calm and connectedness. Additionally, the collaborative nature of gardening promotes teamwork and social cohesion, strengthening bonds among classmates and fostering a supportive learning environment.

School gardens created with the support of DonorsChoose often extend beyond the classroom walls, becoming hubs of community engagement. Students take pride in sharing their harvest with neighbors and hosting community events in their school gardens. These projects foster positive relationships between schools and their surrounding communities, bridging urban divides and fostering a sense of belonging.
