Cultivating the Piano Class

My students need keyboard stands, benches and pedals to successfully learn keyboarding and piano techniques.

My Students

The population ranges from middle class income to homeless within the school and the school district. The school is the oldest African American high school and has a proud and supportive alumni who continue to assist with keeping up with the school's integrity and tradition. The students are very tech savvy and are very open-minded in learning foreign music. Students who have been placed in some of the music classes offered at the school have expressed their interest in music technology. The students seek lessons that are more engaging through technology based music instruction. Students in the fine arts program are also students who seek immediate feedback. For example, SmartMusic software records and grades their performance. This software helps student engaged in sight reading exercises.

My Project

There are many students who have expressed their interest in piano lessons and a piano class. Fortunately, this is my second year teaching piano. Although student achievement in the class has been rewarding, I have been faced with several challenges including having sufficient resources to teach the class.

These resources will give all students the opportunity to effectively practice piano skills on their own and will allow students to work on their own keyboards independently.

The piano stands, benches, and pedals will be used by the students to practice assignments and repertoire given in class. This will increase student engagement and independent practice.
