My Students
Durango high school is located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The high school has a diverse population, with students of color making up 80% of the student population; this makes Durango unique because population of students of color is almost 20% higher than those of other high schools in the district.
Not only is Durango high school ethnically diverse, students also come from various socio-economic backgrounds.
Not all of my students have equal access to resources.
My Project
I teach a student-athlete leadership class that helps to develop and encourage our athletes on campus to take on a leadership role in all aspects of their lives - in the classroom, during practice, while playing, as well as with their friends.
We read high-interest books that focus on a growth mindset and how to be a leader; students also participate in Socratic seminars to help them understand and appreciate what they have reading through meaningful discourse.
The book selected for this project will help students understand the importance of a growth mindset, while also learning valuable and applicable strategies that they can apply to their lives so that they can become the best leaders possible.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
