My Project
This year was our school's first year to have a FIRST Lego League Challenge Team! This after-school learning program was an amazing opportunity for students with limited to no home access to technology. The students (and I!) learned the value of teamwork, collaboration and perseverance throughout our rookie year. In fact, when the season ended, the students asked if we could continue to practice because they were so awed and inspired by what they saw more veteran teams were able to accomplish at the district and state tournaments. When I approached some of the other coaches for advice on how to support the students in the "off season," they shared that a big turning point for their teams was when they were able to purchase more robot kits so the students could spend more time testing and revising their code and less time waiting for their turn.
Having access to more robot kits would be an absolute game changer for our Lego Robotics team!
With 10 students sharing just 1 or 2 robots, there is an unfortunate amount of wait time involved. Not only do students need to wait for their turn, but they also need to take time to repeatedly connect and disconnect their devices to download the code to the robot. With more robots, the students will be able to collaborate in smaller groups while staying constantly connected to their assigned robot. That way they can focus on troubleshooting and refining their programs without needing to interrupt their work so someone else can test their program.
