Help me give my students additional reading options. Each year students come to me with new interests and backgrounds. I would like to teach Children of the Dust Bowl as a whole class non-fiction unit.

My Project

My classroom is my happy place and the highlight of the room is my library. Not only is it a warm, welcoming space with soft lighting and a floor rug, but it is filled with wonderful stories to enchant my seventh and eighth graders. Each year there seems to be a need to grow the selection of books available, this year it is hunting and fishing titles and horror novels for this class. Students have Reading Workshop every day in my classroom and they have daily and weekly reading goals that we track throughout the quarter. Conferencing with students during this time helps me be familiar with the books choices they enjoy, the progress they are making in their books, their reading habits and areas for growth. Additionally, I have selected a non-fiction classroom set of books for studying the Dust Bowl era in U.S. history. Students today are interested in reading non-fiction books and learning about the history and people of our nation. We use a variety of discussion tools throughout our reading units to ensure that we completely understand the author's message and purpose for writing. It is fun to provide wonderful reading opportunities for my students and watch them improve their reading and comprehension skills.
