Help me give my students gardening supplies to cultivate a sustainable plant space that will grow their sense of kuleana in each other as well as Hawaii's aina.
My second grade students are ready to apply their science and engineering skills in a way that gives back to their community and to their aina; the land that sustains us.
The raised planters, soil, plant food, and growing cage will blend their collective knowledge of farming, with the actual planting and stewardship of a classroom garden through collaboration and dependence upon the natural elements around them, and each other.
The mop and cleaner pads will help maintain the inside space as the young gardeners track back into their classroom after a muddy day with Hawai'i's vibrant rainy weather patterns.
Kuleana goes far beyond just planting and caring for a garden. It touches upon sustainability for future generations that follow.
Malama will be able to weave its way into the students' knowledge and just as seeds grow, so will a sense of caring as the harvested produce is shared. The garden will serve as a natural way to enhance stewardship of resources as students learn how to propagate from existing plants to continue flourishing new generations of plants and sense of aloha for Hawaii's precious environment.
