Cultivating Culture for Kids

My Students

I teach at a public Montessori school in South Carolina. Our school is a Title I school with many students coming from low-income backgrounds. We have 21 students in our multi-age class, and they come from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. Because we are a Montessori school students are in the same class for three years, and we get to watch them grow and learn every year! It's so exciting to see the progress they make and the ways they change between starting the program and finishing. The hands-on, individual pace of a Montessori classroom, as well as the emphasis on peacebuilding and problem-solving means that our students are given opportunities to blossom not just academically but socially and emotionally as well.

My Project

A special part of the Montessori classroom is the emphasis on making connections to our place in the larger world. We emphasize community, both in our classroom and expanding out the global sense. We want our children to be aware that we are all connected and that there are many cultures around the world.

Because children learn with their eyes, hands, and ears we want to create a cultural area that is exciting to all their senses!

This project combines beautiful books, maps, and hands-on objects that will be the beginning of "continent boxes" that students can explore as we learn about each of the continents around the world. We want students to see the flags, the geography, people, animals, and landmarks. The boxes will contain all these types of things so that the students can see, hear, and touch to broaden their understanding of the world around them. We want them to see the things that make us the same and appreciate the things that make us different.
