My Project

My 11th grade Honors English students at Chicago Academy High School are a remarkable group of highly motivated learners, eager to engage with challenging texts that reflect and inform their understanding of the world. Our school proudly serves a low-income community, and our students possess immense potential and a fervent desire for knowledge. To truly nurture their critical thinking and prepare them for college-level discourse, it's essential that we provide them with literature that is both rigorous and relevant, sparking profound conversations about societal challenges and human resilience.

Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower will empower our students to envision a more just and sustainable future, providing a critical lens through which to analyze the world around them.

This singularly powerful and timely novel, set in a near-future America ravaged by climate change, economic inequality, and social unrest, explores themes that resonate deeply with the realities and concerns facing our students today. It prompts vital discussions about community building, the search for meaning in a chaotic world, the dangers of unchecked power, and the importance of adaptability and empathy. By providing a class set of this groundbreaking work, we can empower our students to analyze complex socio-political issues, develop their own voices, and prepare them for critical, college-level discourse.

Bringing Parable of the Sower into our classroom will not only enrich our students' literary experience but also foster crucial skills for their academic and personal growth. It will allow us to delve into the nuances of dystopian literature, explore diverse perspectives, and cultivate the kind of critical inquiry that is essential for success in higher education. With your support, we can equip these ambitious students with the tools to dissect compelling narratives, grapple with difficult questions, and ultimately, become agents of positive change in their own communities and beyond.
