Cultivating Compassion with Sewing, Growing and Games!
Help me give my students supplies to make items for cultivating compassion; a parachute for cooperative games, flower pots and light-up stuffed animal supplies, including batteries, led lights, felt, needles and glue.
The items listed in this project will be used to create projects cultivating compassion. In my classroom we learn about a variety of social justice topics throughout the year encouraging students to see the world through the eyes of other people. Our culminating unit explores the question- How can I help?
In the elementary grades we talk a lot about being a good friend as a means to alleviating suffering in others.
Students will play cooperative games with the parachute to practice empathy, turn taking and friendship skills.
I will introduce 400+ students to sewing. We will also grow marigolds from seed and decorate pots to gift them to someone students care about, or to gift them to one of the causes we have learned about in class. By sewing a toy they can gift to a friend, students will enjoy a sense of accomplishment all while mastering a new skill and cultivating empathy and compassion. We will incorporate STEM skills into this project using conductive thread, LED lights and batteries to create a circuit that lights up!
I will measure my student's understanding of compassion through class discussions and students sharing about their learning and choices with me.
