Help me give my students the means to create kindness and cultivate compassion through Kindness Rocks, founded by Megan Murphy. Using the acrylic paint pens students will be able to create a Kindness Garden with painted rock messages.
I work with 9-10 year olds who are on the edge of making the transition from child (waiting for things to be done for them) and young adult (taking on responsibility) They are eager to learn, but need the tools to build confidence and put their learning into action. We have a wide variety of learning styles, ranging from learning disabilities to identified gifted.
They don't even know what they don't know and I want to open their eyes!
Teaching kids to take the initiative, work together, and accept everyone where they are at is a major goal.
My Project
Behind my classroom I have a large garden area that is viewed by many students as they walk to class. I want to spread the kindness "bug" and cultivate a more compassionate community by displaying a garden lined with rocks that have inspirational words of encouragement, gratitude, and offers hope. Painting directly on rocks with the acrylic pens allows students to ability to write messages legibly and create eye catching designs.
The right message at the right time can change a student's attitude and promote kindness and compassion.
Recognizing that our society functions better with kindness and compassion, and using Megan Murphy's Kindness Rocks Project as an example, we want to create our own rock garden. One message or phrase at the right time can change a student's day and alter their path.
