Cultivating Compassion in the Classroom

Help me give my students books to teach compassion and sensory tools to help them regulate their emotions in a safe and calm space.

My Project

Students in first grade are just learning how to identify and regulate their emotions. It can often be difficult for them to think beyond their own feelings and put themselves in others' shoes.

The empathy journals will be used in class to cultivate compassion towards their classmates as well as members of their community.

We will have class discussions about our journal topics and brainstorm ways we can alleviate the suffering of classmates that may be having a hard time. We will work through the journals as a class as part of our classroom SEL curriculum. By gauging the discussion topics as well as looking at their writing in their empathy journals, I will gain insight as to their emotional growth and understanding of compassion. We will also use the Little Spot books to identify and explain emotions. Students will receive several mini copies of these books to take home and share their learning with their families.

Finally, there will be some sensory tools for students to use to practice self care and self compassion to regulate tough emotions they may be having. We will have a safe and calming space for classmates to relax and reflect. This includes rice which will be used in a sensory table where friends can work together to discuss feelings and resolve conflict.

It is so important for these young learners to know that it is ok to have difficult emotions and that they are in a safe and loving space where they are allowed to feel these emotions, surrounded by classmates that can give them the space and compassion to work though their rough spots.
