Cultivating Career Skills

Help me give my students donations for my agriculture class, which will provide many immigrant students with a chance to grow plants while building skills for future careers through hands-on experiences in agricultural food and natural resources.

My Project

As an Agricultural Food and Natural Resources (AFNR) teacher, I am launching a project to grow strawberries, and I am seeking donations to bring this vision to life. This initiative is more than just planting seeds—it's about cultivating both food security and community well-being.

The act of growing and caring for plants offers numerous health benefits, from reducing stress to increasing physical activity.

It also fosters a sense of responsibility and connection to nature, which is especially valuable for students learning about sustainability and food systems. For many immigrants, particularly those from Micronesia, growing crops is a deeply rooted cultural practice. Providing them with opportunities to engage in agriculture not only supports their sense of belonging but also helps them feel more connected to their new community.

Food security is a critical issue, especially as we see rising costs and limited access to fresh produce in certain areas. Teaching students how to grow their own food empowers them to become self-sufficient and strengthens the local food system. This hands-on experience with agriculture is also a gateway to future careers in the AFNR sector, offering practical skills that are highly valuable in today's economy. While growing strawberries may seem easy, growing premium sweet Korean strawberries requires specific conditions that require a greenhouse to keep the temperature in the ideal 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit range, hydro buckets to use the Dutch bucket system, and grow lights to ensure the berries get 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness.

By supporting this strawberry project, you are not only investing in healthy, locally grown food but also in the future of young people who will lead the way in agricultural innovation and food security.
