Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This past school year I had the privilege of teaching Kindergarten in a low-income charter school in South Los Angeles.
The majority of my students came not been exposed to literacy or a rich language at home. Many of them were very quiet not grasping the language in either Spanish or English. I knew I had to work hard to enrich their lives academically. The families of these children were loving and cared about their child's success in school. I learned I also had to teach them how to nurture literacy at home.
It was hard to tell students and parents to read at home because they did not have books at home. I had very limited Spanish books and could only give them black and white copies. In the classroom my library consisted on a few colored books the rest were black and white copies. My school is a bilingual school that has limited funds and resources. At the end of the school year students are expected to read and write in both English and Spanish.
My Project
In this coming school year, my students will use these resources during read aloud. I will read to them high interest books that will engage them and motivate them to begin reading. The non-fiction and fiction readers are books they can begin reading independently during Readers Workshop. I will use the Cd's as music during independent work time and calendar time.
