My students are beautiful and intelligent individuals that come to class everyday with an eagerness to learn! Although they often come from less than perfect situations, they are still extremely capable of achieving GREATNESS!
The majority of our students live at or below the poverty level.
Therefore, they often lack basic resources and opportunities that others would consider to be an everyday part of life. Therefore putting information and experiences in their hands is EXTREMELY important.
Additionally, statistics prove that families with incomes below poverty are less likely to be read to at home than those with incomes above poverty. Therefore, it is essential to literary success to provide these young students with opportunities to read, and to be read too in the classroom.
Kids of all ages enjoy being read too. This project will provide my classroom with several classroom sets of books and/or novels. These resources will help my students in many ways including an increased development of literacy skills, and a love for reading!
Books such as these stir the senses, inspire imagination, and spark a love of reading that will last a lifetime.
Furthermore, only 48% of children in this country are read to each day. Class read alouds increase brain development, knowledge, language development, and build literacy skills. As the following quote points out, reading aloud is beneficial for students of all ages.
“If we are always reading aloud something that is more difficult than children can read themselves then when they come to that book later, or books like that, they will be able to read them – which is why even a fifth grade teacher, even a tenth grade teacher, should still be reading to children aloud. There is always something that is too intractable for kids to read on their own.” – Mem Fox
