Many of my students have very little stability in their lives. They have learned that school, is their one constant. They know, appreciate, and understand that everyday, they walk into my classroom, it will be filled with engaging activities, fun, and learning. We learn through reading, and this takes them further than many of them have ever imagined going.
75% of my students read below grade level, and 100% receive free lunch.
Students are given food backpacks every Friday for the weekend. Many have our students suffer great tragedies, and trauma in their young lives, and are yearning for any form of normalcy they can find. I provide that for my students.
Many of my students have a hard time reading for pleasure. It's simply because they struggle with reading. I have learned that if you can show students connections with books, they will put forth the effort to read. We tell students to "read on your independent reading level," and that doesn't always encourage my students because many read at least two grades or lower.
I want my students to find a love for reading, but from that, also learn how to cope with traumatic experiences in real life.
Many times when my students read, they can make connections, discuss, write about the book, but then how can they apply this to their lives for the better?
This leads me to the reason for journals. Many of my students have never had their own journal. They don't understand how taking the time to write about your life and future plans can impact them. I want to show them how reading a book, can cause you to make changes in their lives. This project would allow me this opportunity.
