Children are natural gardeners and nature enthusiasts. They're curious, like hands-on activities, and love to get dirty.
I teach in an urban, predominantly working class neighborhood in New York City. I am responsible for educating 18 enthusiastic Pre-k students. My young students are eager to learn and curious about the world around them.
Children growing up in the city do not always get a chance to see nature up close. Children must be made aware of the interdependence on the planet of all species. Most of the children live in big apartment buildings and do not have access to nature and gardens. I would like to give them an opportunity to take care of their own plants. Gardening is a great way to teach environmental awareness by observing nature. This will give children with different levels of learning an opportunity to learn about plants and nature.
The children will be learning science but will also practice math skills of measuring, counting and graphing as they chart the plants growth. Literacy will be incorporated by reading books on plants and drawing pictures of plant growth in their journals.
I have noticed that many students who are coming to school for the first time, do not have a lot of prior knowledge when it comes to nature. Gardening is a wonderful way for students to witness a life cycle. They will have the chance to grow their own plants and to take care of them. I feel it is also important for children to gain an understanding of the natural community and the importance of nature. My goal is to reveal to them the basic laws of nature and the risks to our planet posed by mankind.
I am requesting a classroom greenhouse so that each child would be able to watch life in action and be responsible for their own plant. I am requesting two garden sets for outside gardening in front of our school. We need a magnifier to examine plant growth up close and plant stickers to use in our journals. Last, we would like an insect specimen set so that the children could examine insect parts up close.
There is nothing more gratifying then to watch a child's interest and self-esteem grow when they have been involved in a meaningful project. The children will experience the satisfaction that comes from caring for something over time and observing the life cycle firsthand. Beautiful gardens can be an act of making a space in this world into a haven of peace. A garden that each child in Room 135 would help to create. Thank you for taking the time to read our proposal.
