My Students

Do you wish you had your own personal chef? One day, you could hire one of my students! Our district has begun a Culinary Arts program to prepare them to enter the workforce upon leaving high school. We strive to give them the tools necessary for them to have a successful career in hospitality.

Our students are amazing and have so much potential!

Our county is one of the poorest in Texas, so our students often fall into the vicious cycle for which our community has become known. Over 85% of our students are on free or reduced lunches due to the widespread poverty in our area. For this reason, many are not able to afford the tuition and expense of going to college. Our school district recognizes this problem and has taken steps to give our students a competitive edge in the workforce and the tools necessary for them to become productive members of society. We have begun a culinary arts program in which our students learn the necessary skills to obtain a job in the food service or hospitality industry during and after high school or have the knowledge base to be successful in culinary school. They leave us with a nationally recognized safety and sanitation certification to give them an edge on the competition. Please join me in support of our students by sponsoring our project.

My Project

My students need commercial-grade equipment such as Cookie Cutter sets, Serving Tools, Dough Hooks, Mixing Spoons, and a Scale to use in the Culinary Arts lab. Because our program is evolving from an outdated home economics program, many of the tools and equipment we have are designed for household use. Our kitchen has been built as a commercial kitchen, so many of the items we are using are beginning to show much wear and tear due to the high temperatures that they are exposed to during the cooking process. The resources I have requested will help us better prepare quick breads, doughs, and batters. For instance, we have six stand mixers, but only one dough hook. That issue makes for a VERY short 49 minute class period, causing many students to not be able to finish the recipe for that day. Many times, this results in wasted product and in turn a waste of funds. As we are seeing more and more cuts in funding for education, it is essential that we have the tools necessary to maximize our funds. You can be the one who makes this possible!

Without these items, our students will not have the opportunity to learn some of the essential skills that will make them more marketable to employers and more successful in their post-secondary education.
