Cuisenaire Rods

Help me give my students wooden cuisenaire rods to help model the mathematics they are learning. Cuisenaire rods are valuable in their flexibility to model a wide range of concepts for both striving and advanced learners.

My Project

During our most recent staff meeting, our school math lead asked us to bring the manipulatives that we use to make math "real" for our students. We were all in agreement that even kids in the "upper" grades benefit from working with manipulatives in mathematics. Math manipulatives help make abstract ideas concrete. They are "friendly" and can build students' confidence by giving them a way to test and confirm their reasoning. Moreover, they are also useful tools in solving problems and can help lift math off the page.

Cuisenaire rods are an especially valuable tool because they provide a visual, tactile, and concrete approach to abstract math.

Wooden cuisenaire rods not only "feel" good to work with, they are a versatile collection of rectangular rods of 10 colors, each color corresponding to a different length.

Students will enjoy discovering the relationships between the different lengths of cuisenaire rods. Cuisenaire rods can help provide many opportunities to introduce, investigate, and reinforce not only the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), but also geometry, measurement, and fractions.

It will be awesome to have enough cuisenaire rods to either work with a partner whole class, or in small groups. Moreover, our upper grade cohort is very collaborative and generous. These cuisenaire rods will be used by all.

Without a doubt, these smart math manipulatives will make a positive difference for all our students. And for our most striving students, we will have another powerful opportunity to reengage them.
