Our classroom is a busy space that is home to thirty-two crazy, curious, and fantastic fifth graders. My kids all have varying reading interests and abilities, and several of my students are English Language Learners (ELL). My kids are excited to explore high-interest fiction and nonfiction books, many of them especially love graphic novels. Fifth-grade students in our school have a sustained silent reading block every day. They have the freedom to choose books that they want to read. I want every child in my classroom to enjoy our sustained silent reading block, and to find their book, the one that makes them fall in love with reading.
The often requested, high-interest novels and graphic novels that I have chosen for this project will help the reluctant readers in my classroom develop a lifelong love of reading. Many of my of students enjoy reading graphic novels, but, it is especially important to be able to engage my students who struggle with reading, and graphic novels are a wonderful way to do that! Not only do the incredible images get students excited about reading them, but, the illustrations in graphic novels also help struggling readers understand the vocabulary, increase their interest in reading, and reading fluency. The more that these kids read, the more confident that they will become in their reading abilities. Strengthening their reading skills will transfer to increased success in all subject areas. We need exciting new graphic novels that my students will be able to choose from to spark their passion for reading. Donations to this project will give my current and future students the gift of stories that will become a part of them forever, a gift that can never be taken away from them. The flashlights included in this project will be used by students when they are reading in class, because what is more relaxing than cuddling up with a flashlight and a great book!?
