Help me give my students cubby lockers to store their coats, backpacks and books and a teacher desk with a chair where I can easily work one-on-one with students.
Creativity, imagination, problem solving and collaboration are key components to authentic learning in our classroom. I have high expectations for every student. It is my responsibility to provide a variety of learning opportunities to help each child meet or exceed their goals. Our school is a K-2 school with approximately 1,100 children enrolled.
We have a diverse population of ethnic backgrounds, a growing ELL population, a high percentage of students who need accelerated learning opportunities, and students who need reading and math interventions to help them establish a firm foundation for successful learning.
My Project
My classroom is overflowing with twenty-three second graders, and I only have twenty-one cubby lockers. I would love for all of my students to have their own cubby to hang their coats, organize their headphones and encore shirts as well as store their books.
Each child needs his or her own space to learn and practice organizational skills as well as being responsible for a small space of personal items.
If each child has his or her own cubby, we can also reduce the chance of lice spreading in the event a child is infested with it. Every child needs a locker in the classroom, and the addition of this piece of furniture would make a difference for my students.
It's important to have a work area to teach students individually or in pairs. Every day, I work one-on-one with students to review assignments from the previous day or reteach a lesson. I am currently using a small rectangular table as a teacher desk, which makes the space limited to work with one or two students. Every morning when I begin calling students up to work with them, I have to push my plans, laptop and other papers aside to make room for my students. An L-shaped desk would provide additional room for all of these materials without having to move them each day and space to work effectively with my students. A comfortable chair on wheels would be easier to move on the tile floor.
