My Project

Benjamin Martin Elementary serves approximately 550 students, ranging from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Nestled right outside of the gates for Fort Liberty, about 20% of our student population are military-affiliated. The school is culturally and ethnically diverse with 88% of the students coming from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds. 100% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.

So many of our students come to school with baggage and burdens that are not theirs to carry, but we do whatever we can to help ensure that their needs are being met.

The goal of this project is to encourage them to develop their social-emotional learning (SEL) skills while playing games and getting to know one another. eSports is more than just gaming—it’s a powerful tool for teaching teamwork, communication, resilience, and responsible digital behavior. By tapping into students’ natural interest in technology and play, eSports creates engaging opportunities to build social-emotional skills and connect learners of all backgrounds. Especially in elementary settings, esports offers a modern, inclusive, and innovative way to support whole-child development while preparing students for the digital world they’re already part of.

By using the Nintendo Switch and additional controllers, up to 4 students can play at a time. In eSports, kids take on challenges, set goals, and figure out how to improve—just like real-world learning. They also learn how to talk respectfully with teammates and work with others from different backgrounds—skills that are important both online and off.
