As a rural town located in Southwestern Montana with breathtaking views and endless opportunities, many are called to settle here, taking advantage of a public school system that houses Elementary, Middle and High School under one roof.
Many students come from wonderful homes with a strong emphasis on education; however, many do not live that reality.
Our community lies at the junction of three counties where both Interstate 90 and Highway 287 intersect. As our small town offers many amenities to the underprivileged (such as a food bank, dental office, medical clinic, etc.), folks tend to land here to start a new life.
With a population of just over 2000 people and an inflated cost-of-living due to the successful ventures in the western end of Gallatin County, there are approximately 6.5% of residents under the poverty line. While folks want the best education possible for the community’s children, sometimes the funds just aren't there.
At the school’s level, with over 750 students enrolled K-12, 30% of our students are enrolled in a free or reduced-cost lunch program. Many others come from homes that just barely lie above the threshold of requirements.
My Project
In order to maximize space in our technology lab, work stations are set up at both tables as well as along countertops stretched across one wall of the room. While it is fantastic that there are varying options for seating that suit each student, one option has deteriorated. There are 10 workstations set up along the wall, with students utilizing rickety, wobbly and unsafe wooden stools. The stools have been repaired and restored as much as possible, having had the support dowels, seat and legs tightened repeatedly. However, they just won’t last much longer and before a student topples, causing bodily injury and damage to the equipment, the stools need replacing.
The stools obviously will benefit this year’s students but will continue to provide proper posture, support, and safety to hundreds of students in the future.
