I teach 5th grade in a rural elementary school in North Carolina. 44% of our students qualify for free lunch. Due to recent plant closings in our county, many of our students' families have lost their jobs in the textile and furniture industries. As a way to really excite and motivate our students, our whole fifth grade team has come up with an innovative idea. We want to teach the mystery genre throughout the curriculum. We plan on starting our unit by mailing each child a short mystery to decipher at home.
(All students who come up with the correct answer will earn a small prize.) In addition, we plan on carrying the mystery genre throughout all of our other subjects. For example, in Social Studies, we will be learning about the states in the U.S. by unveiling a "Mystery State" and uncovering the clues to figure out which one it is. We will write our own mystery stories, solve mystery word problems in math, and discover the mysteries of science. We will conclude our unit with a Mystery Dinner Theater that the teachers will perform. The students will have the opportunity to collect clues and solve the mystery by the end of the evening.
I wish to teach the novel Peppermints in the Parlor by Barbara Brooks Wallace. It is a thrilling novel with twists and turns that I hope will spark enthusiasm for mysteries in my students. There is a sequel to the novel that I hope my students will also read after our class study is over. I am asking for a set of 25 Peppermints in the Parlor books. Having a set of these books in my classroom would allow me to teach the mystery genre and get my children excited about reading. I am looking forward to teaching this unit, and I know that the integration we are planning will make the entire experience meaningful for my students. I would be so thankful for any help at all.
