My Students
My third graders are eager to become global citizens and learn about the world around them. These thoughtful, curious, inquisitive young scholars and scientists are hungry for learning. They enjoy creative brain breaks, challenging real-world math problems, and critical thinking. Above all, they value being kind and being fair. I have never been prouder of a group of students.
We are a Title I public school in eastern Las Vegas full of kind, thoughtful, inquisitive young learners.
Our inclusion classroom welcomes a plethora of different types of learners and embraces all.
My Project
I am requesting materials for classroom transformations. Our first will be a construction themed math unit on area and perimeter. By providing a real-world connection, I hope to demystify this math concept with concrete, hands-on practice and math games! Our next transformation will be spies, crime scenes, and detectives where we will embed science, social studies, critical thinking, math, and reading into a multi-day event where students are transformed into mini-detectives and posed with challenging team tasks. Activities such as the "digit detective" helps us practice place value in our new "top secret" notebooks while keeping to the theme of our day. By creating a novel environment (detectives) while still reviewing content, I am transforming an ordinary day in the classroom into a unique and memorable experience. In doing so, students are actively engaged and having fun while learning! I am also requesting a variety of math puzzles, dice, and games to differentiate for my small literacy and math groups. We utilize station teaching with four groups of six, so my students need new ways to practice math skills. Playing war with flash cards and strategy dice games definitely beats the "drill and kill" worksheets! Our requested mental math game helps with number sense and strategy while the PET ME multiplication and division game combines my students' love for animals with our math content.
