This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn. Benjamin Franklin reminds us that to truly impact our students we must immerse them in learning. Our chemistry class is centered around the idea of how we apply our learning to our everyday lives.

My students come from all corners of the world, and all walks of life.

Our school is very diverse, but has a 87% underprivileged community. My students have experienced things that kids their age should never have to experience, yet they still hold on to the innocence of being a child. Many of my students have been exposed to crime in their lives, and have had direct contact with the forensic science field. For this reason, my students are very curious about forensic science, and how it can help them improve their own lives, as well as their communities.

My Project

I obtained a Forensic chemistry degree at Penn State, and my students are constantly asking me about what it takes to be a forensic scientist. Due to all of the TV programs about forensics, there are many misconceptions about what forensic science is. In these shows the glamour and back-story overshadow the most important part of forensics; that science is at the forefront. My goal in my chemistry classroom, is to teach my students chemistry, but more importantly how chemistry is applied to everyday life. Forensic science is an application of chemistry that my students have been directly exposed to. For this reason, I want to add more forensic science components to my classroom. I am asking for 2 lab kits and one lab book. The lab kits will allow my kids to have a hands-on experience and application of chemistry, and the lab book will help guide me in preparing the lessons with a forensics angle.

Research shows that relevance is one of the most important factors that fuels learning.

Forensic Science has relevance to my students' lives. I have had a student come up to me and say that he wanted to study forensics, because of an injustice done to his family. Knowing chemistry, and having an application of forensic science will give my students a strong basis for which to continue their education, as well as empower them to create justice in their communities purely by being informed.
