My Project
It's not secret that I work at a Title I school in an urban district. I love the work I do. We have all of the problems that one would associate with working in such an environment, but one over-looked aspect is in grooming. There are people who generously donate coats, hats, uniforms, and even shoes. However, hair is often overlooked.
"My mood depends on how good my hair looks.
I make hair contact before I make eye contact. If my hair looks good, I can deal with anything." This is not only true for adults, but for children as well. However, many times the children who come through our doors come from homes and situations where their parents have not be able to consider or think about their child's hair. It becomes a casualty of survival for the adults, but a source of anxiety for the child.
I am fortunate to work with people who can "do hair" and have been able to send children out into the world beautifully coifed. They do this at their own expense, sometimes going to the nearby store to get supplies. This project seeks to remedy the situation by providing some hair care products to be stored at the school, while allowing students to take home items such as combs and brushes that have been used for their hair. The books will make the area in which the hair products are stored a reminder that "good hair, good mood, good day."
