Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are always pushing ourselves and learning from the missteps along the way. I teach in my home community.
I graduated from here, I live here , and now I teach here.
My students are just like me in so many ways and I love the challenge of adapting to the new set of needs they have that the changes in our town brings. Our demographics are changing every year, we're getting bigger, new cultures are colliding and yet the heart of the community remains the same, the stories remain the same, and the challenges linger. My students are more aware of the world around them than I ever was and it's so inspiring to see how the changes in our community have encouraged them to learn and to grow. Our school creates such a positive atmosphere that fosters that thirst for knowledge and that ever growing need for connection. Every day I see my students reaching across boundaries that I never knew existed and it fills me with pride and hope for our future. I know I'm teaching the leaders of tomorrow and I am so proud to work in my native community.
My Project
My classroom is incredibly tech heavy. We are on computers working in our online classroom at least 2 days of every week and that's not counting days where we're typing, revising, and editing our essays on the computers, as well.
I dedicate one day of every week to SSR time in my classroom, because while tech education is important, I want to make sure I don't lose the heart of the English classroom, and that is BOOKS!
My kids need access to lots of books in every genre, every style, every level. I'm trying to create lifelong readers which means I need to transition away from the idea that we only read books for school.
SSR days are free. There is no assessment, there are no reading logs, there are no expectations except you find something you actually want to read and you read it. In order for this to be successful I need an amazing classroom library.
