Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our project centers on a student-led book club and read-aloud program designed to support all learners and ESL students in our school community. Students will take the lead in organizing and facilitating weekly book club sessions and read-alouds using The Crossover in English and Spanish, along with other literacy materials. These sessions will provide both a supportive learning environment and a culturally inclusive space where language learners can strengthen their reading, speaking, and comprehension skills in both English and Spanish.

Our student leaders will guide this book club by modeling fluent reading, and creating engaging literacy activities for younger or newly arrived students.

They will take responsibility for planning each session, selecting discussion questions, preparing materials, and mentoring their peers. These student leaders will not only sharpen their own literacy and leadership skills but also serve as role models and mentors within our multilingual school community.

By offering a space led by peers who share similar experiences, we aim to build a more inclusive and empowering school environment. Our book club fosters peer-to-peer support, cultural pride, and stronger language development—benefiting not just participants, but the overall literacy culture of our school.
