Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My math students are in middle school. Many have shared their dreams for the future and I know they will need 21 century math skills and a college education to get there. They hope to be architects, doctors, computer programmers, and animators. Some even dream to one day work in a non-profit capacity helping families or animals.
I teach at a Title I middle school where seventy-four percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch and many come from very technology-poor homes.
My students love hands-on projects and topics where they can discuss issues and express opinions. My school lacks the resources to meet my students’ needs and I am concerned that their lack of exposure will not prepare them for the rigors of high school and college. My goal is to create a classroom environment where students are engaged in the learning activities to improve their mathematical comprehension and presentation skills.
My Project
My students need a subscription to Scholastic Math Magazine to improve both their reading and math skills. The math of day to day living is often intertwined with reading materials: news articles, contracts, offers, charts, and graphs. My students will benefit from analyzing real situations and the accompanying math to learn how to become better decision makers when they are adults.
Most of my students are below proficient in both reading and mathematics and need increased opportunities to practice and apply the skills they have learned in an engaging way.
The magazine presents modern day topics that interest young teenagers. The subscription includes scaffolded teaching materials that will allow me to design mini lessons aimed at each student's learning level. Additionally, the program includes games and videos that will further expand my student's understanding of math concepts.
