My students would benefit from having their own butterfly to watch grow. They will be writing the process the butterfly goes through from the egg to larva to cocoon to the butterfly. They will be drawing what stage their butterfly is in at the time they see it. This will help them become interested in learning the stages of the life of a butterfly. The class will be writing sentences about their own butterfly and where they think it went after the class has let them go.
My Project
By having the students have their own butterfly, the students look for their "pet" butterfly on a daily basis. They get really excited about seeing what their butterfly is doing in class. The butterflies come as larva.
The students are amazed to see how their larva grows.
They see how big the larva gets. They are surprised by how much they grow before they get into their cocoon. They see the larva become a J and then spin into the cocoon. After two weeks, they watch as their cocoon opens into the beautiful painted monarch butterfly. The butterfly will eat juice on sponges as the other butterflies hatch.
