Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from an urban school district and attend a Title I school. We celebrate our diversity, having students of Hispanic, African-American, European, and Asian backgrounds. Students often have to maintain part-time, and some full-time, jobs to help with bills and school supplies. We also have a high student-in-temporary-living population. Some students travel over an hour in the morning to get to school, coming from all over the city to receive a rigorous education and attend a higher performing school.
Most of the students come from elementary schools with little to no sports programs.
They start at a disadvantage because they don't know what cross country even is. Many of my students will be first-generation college students. Our students are a vibrant, joyous group. They deal with challenges and hardships well beyond their years, and yet they keep high grades and participate in extracurricular activities amidst their struggles.
My students have not had the same resources and support as others from different backgrounds, but they have the drive and determination. They are great kids with big hearts and appreciate having resources at school that they would not have access to outside of school.
My Project
Students feel more connected to school when they participate in extra-curriculars. They love being on a team and feeling part of a family at school. Not all of our runners have the money to purchase running shoes and not having this equipment can deter these students from joining the team.
Not all students can afford school clothes, let alone running shoes, so providing this support encourages them to join the team and stick with it.
Having stationary bikes allows our injured runners to continue training with the team while being injured. Providing reusable water bottles is not only good for the environment but it also is healthy and cost effective for the students.
