My Project

Thank you for giving my students multi-colored yarns, crochet hooks and yarn needles to support our community service project of giving handmade items to our community.

In my fibers arts elective, we focus on the recurring theme of "gift-giving" - to our families, our school community, and to charity clubs here on campus.

We start (as beginning crocheters) by creating crochet chains for the special education students who come to visit us in the fall for a holiday party. As students progress with their skills, we commit to making at least one Christmas present (usually a dishcloth) for a family member, mentor or supportive adult in their lives. Students love deciding who will receive their gift and writing the note of appreciation for their chosen person. As students progress with their skills, students make scarves which are donated to our school's service club for their silent auction in the spring - the proceeds of which go to the "End Polio Now" initiative. In the spring, we make small presents for our Principal and Vice-Principals during national administrator appreciation days. Next year, with the yarn provided in this project, I would like to progress to teaching the students how to make crochet yarn leis, which in Hawaii, are traditional gifts given at graduation. We have been asked by faculty at our school if we could help make the lei awarded to all students graduating with the honor of biliteracy.

If it wasn't for help from organizations like All State and Donors Choose, I would not have enough classroom funds to create and give away so many projects, especially projects made from the high quality color blends that I requested above. Your help in spreading our "Crochet Kindness" is much appreciated.
