Critical Thinking with Robots

My students need a Lego Mindstorms EV3 Customizable Robot set to design, build & test a ROBOT through imagination and playful creation, and an iPad Mini so that they can program the robot to do tasks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high poverty elementary school with close to one thousand students, that is located in a neighborhood that is settled in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of the students receive a free lunch because of their socio-economic status. My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. They all are English Language Learners and many of them have learning disabilities. Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

From the minute my students walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth.

Seeing the excitement in kids eyes when they learn something new, makes teaching the best job ever. My students need as many hands-on experiences as possible in school, to enhance and reinforce their learning.

My Project

Students are enthralled by robots. I observed a group of students who are in a robotics club at another elementary school and saw how they communicated, problem-solved and worked cooperatively to build and program robots to perform different commands.

I would like to start offering more activities that really work on the 21st Century Skills to help these students see the connection between school and their future.

I want all of our 5th grade students to experience what I saw at the other school.

As technology advances, companies will need to hire employees that possess coding skills. Since I do not know how to code myself, I will be learning alongside my students. I plan on integrating our coding lessons into our common core math and science curriculum.

Students will use our Mini iPad to give commands to the robot using simple codes. Using the skills that are learned by programming the robot, will enable students to understand challenging subjects, encourage them to develop critical thinking skills, grow their ideas, and make their own creations through playful learning experiences.

Exposing my students to technology will help them decide a future path. It will also let them know that computer science is not just in one field, but places they might not think about otherwise.
