Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of my students come from low-income hardworking families. They are a diverse group of an inner city school. I have students with severe learning disabilities and autism; I have English language learners; and I have gifted students. The majority of my students utilize government sponsored free or reduced price lunch program. Most of them take crowded buses on a daily basis to get to school. Some live in extreme poverty with one parent or in a foster home.

Despite everyday challenges, my students are inspiring, smart, and curious young individuals who desperately need modern tools (laptop computers) to learn and utilize 21st century skills: critical thinking , research, and quality presentations.

My students have so much potential but with outdated textbooks and lack of modern technology they won’t be able to compete with their peers who have access to technology. Many of them are preparing to go to college. As their teacher, I want to help them to achieve their highest potential and expose them to the technology and research skills while they are in my classroom.

My Project

I have about forty students in each class. Having at least 2 Chromebook laptop computers will allow my students to work in groups to examine current events around the world. They need to have access to 21st century tools to be able to interpret and evaluate ever-evolving world of media news.

Students will use laptops to read, watch, analyze, and discuss various sources of media to research current events in a particular country from various points of view.

Having these laptop computers will empower my students as they will be able to employ their critical thinking skills to distinguish between fake and real news. They will collaborate and share their findings with each other and with the teacher through Google Classroom. This will help them understand the bias and propaganda while allowing them examine different sources of media that present the same topic from multiple perspectives. Having computers in the classroom will improve media literacy of my students as they would be able to get faster access to current news.
