In my classroom, I currently have a few beat-up sets of Clue! After watching my students begin to develop some deductive reasoning skills, I thought about other board games and activities that could encourage students to use critical thinking skills.
They were not only learning new skills (without realizing it), but they were also enjoying a little friendly competition.
I've also learned that a lot of kids in this generation don't have a lot of experience with board games. I have fond memories of playing board games with my family and friends growing up. I think this would be a great opportunity for students to experience social interaction with their peers face-to-face and not through a screen.
Anything that promotes student thinking is a great tool to have. I'd like to have these activities for students on those days throughout the school year when it's not feasible to begin a new topic. Days such as days before breaks, days with tons of interruptions, and school days toward the end of the year when things are beginning to wind down. It will still give their brains some exercise and a break at the same time.
