Critical Thinking Skills: Let's Read, Learn and Discuss
Help me give my students tools to build critical thinking skills by reading and thinking about current events
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Shaked's classroom raised $222

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The world is complicated. It is more so if a person does not read, think, ask questions and read more. Unfortunately, our hi-tech world has influenced large groups of students to read 'sound bytes' and not read extensively. This pattern can hopefully be stopped at the educational level. Sounds bytes are fun and convenient but not a replacement for reading and understanding the world we live in.
The NY Times Scholastic subscription along with these books can bring current events, questioning and discussion into the classroom.
I will use this content in warm-ups. High School students should be aware of current events and have the curiosity and ability to ask questions. We will learn how to examine the issues, ask questions, learn how to seek more information on topics that we don't understand. We will learn how to read statistics and be able to think about what is true and what is possibly not true.
Teenagers have bubbling issues at home just like communities, cities and countries. How do we resolve problems? It starts at home and in our own families and communities. Some of these books gives us a framework to think about peaceful resolutions to problems. May some of these students seek out 'peace studies' in their future but everyone should have the skills to solve problems.
