Critical Thinking And Cooperation In Designing Play With Building Materials

My students need a new town play rug for car play and Plan a Path Road builder, Engineer a Coaster and Zoob Car designer to promote thinking and cooperative play.

My Students

Our class is an eager group of diverse students. They enjoy walking into our class to explore, learn and grow with a variety of projects. Even their parents love coming in or reading about our activities in newsletters. This year, we have become veterinarians, plumbers and even astronauts.

Young children learn best through play.

We have a number of English Language Learners in our group and students with a variety of disabilities. It is important for them to develop social skills and learn how to play cooperatively in order for them to also learn speech and language skills.

My Project

My students love to build things and love to play cars! All of my students enjoy this, for example. We have a "studded construction wall" and pieces of PVC pipe and fixtures. Students not only "plumb" the wall, but they will construct "bikes" and scooters to "ride" around our classroom.

Often students work together to construct these items.

Our class needs a larger variety of materials that will promote this in other centers such as the car/farm/doll house play area. When students are having trouble working together or sharing, it provides teachable moments for us to promote social skill building or problem solving by our peers.
