Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"To truly transform our economy, protect our security, and save our planet from the ravages of climate change, we need to ultimately make clean, renewable energy the profitable kind of energy." - OBAMA
I desire to give my students information to make informed decisions about the energy they use.
My students are spunky, creative, inquiry, IB learners.
There are 25 students in my homeroom, which I service during all content areas, including science. At the beginning of the unit, I frontload information and vocabulary on a topic. After this step, students create questions, which drive our instruction. Then they create projects based on their readings, research, and inquiries to construct meaning and communicate their learning to others.
My Project
My students need grade level, nonfiction texts to make our IB science and social studies topics accessible and meaningful during our shared/closed reading time, independent inquiry, and available for modeling nonfiction text elements to my students. I am asking for texts to support our unit on how people use and manage renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. We will focus on:
⢠The kinds of energy we get from the earth
⢠The extent to which our society depends on earthâÂÂs power sources to function
⢠How responsible use of the earthâÂÂs power sources can affect our planet
These materials are important so we can work smarter.
We can get texts that support our curriculum and that we can use to support our vital non-fiction reading skills in 3rd grade. These kids not only can make more informed and positive energy choices for the future but also share their knowledge with others around them in their homes, communities, and school community. Hopefully, this will encourage change and a further sense of community and responsibility surrounding their energy choices.
