Critical Educational Foundations Center Materials

My students need many tools to help them with their reading and math foundational skills. These include electronic flash cards, Hot Dots Pens and activities, and games.

My Students

The biggest challenge facing my class is that students are expected to learn new standards while still lacking the foundational skills necessary to achieve those standards. My goal this year is to reinforce those foundational skills throughout the year while still being able to teach new standards.

My students are eager to learn but lack the skills to do so at the moment.

We are in a highly impoverished area with a free and reduced lunch rate hovering around 80%. These kids are not getting the foundation skills they require reinforced at home. This makes it so hard for them to do simple functions like multiplication, subtraction, or use proper grammar/punctuation in their writing. If these skills can't be mastered, then the kids aren't able to go deeper into their standards and push themselves to their academic limits. This is so frustrating for the kids and that often leads to behavior issues. If we can make the learning of foundation skills fun for the kids, they'll be eager to practice and learn them.

My Project

My students need many tools to help them with their reading and math foundational skills. These include electronic flash cards, Hot Dots Pens and activities, and games. My students are going to use these materials in centers to reinforce their foundation skills. Most of the materials are intended to be used when they are not in small group with me. Most of these centers will be independent, though the games will be used by multiple students. I plan on using these materials every day as a supplement to my normal teaching materials. I am going to heavily look at building up these foundations next year, so the materials are an integral part of my plans for the 2015-16 school year. I don't plan on sending my students to the next grade unprepared for the rigors of 5th grade.

This project is going to make a difference because it's going to make learning the foundation skills fun.

These kids can't participate in a rigorous curriculum if they don't have the foundation skills which are the building blocks for everything else they do. This is going to help them achieve so much better in 5th grade, middle school, and beyond. The confidence the students are going to gain is immeasurable, which will in turn push them to achieve at their highest possible ability.
