My Students
"Please join me on the rug, sitting Criss-Cross Applesauce." Now, imagine if you were five years old, looked all around the classroom and couldn't find a rug anywhere! Well, that has been a problem for my Kindergarteners. Most of them know that it really means the "imaginary" rug.
My enthusiastic Kindergarteners attend a Title 1 school in the heart of the Silicon Valley.
These students come from diverse backgrounds and include English Language Learners, Special Education students and those from single-parent households. More than half of all students qualify for free or reduced price lunches. My students love coming to school. Each day, they enter the room with big smiles and leave telling their parents, "I had an awesome day!
My Project
With your generous donations, I will be able to provide my Kindergarten students with their own, comfortable spot on the rug to learn. We spend a lot of time on the floor. We do calendar time, whole-group lessons, read, write, listen to stories, play games, sing, dance, work in small groups and use the projector on the rug. Every Kindergartener deserves to have their own personal space on a soft, comfy rug!
Students will have their own personal space on the rug.
They will be free from distractions of others touching them. They will gain valuable learning time because there will be no confusion as to where to sit while transitioning between activities. Students will have more opportunities to collaborate with others, share materials and engage in activities that help them meet the Common Core Standards. Simply put, they will have a soft, cozy spot to sit on.
